Heidi Ruokoniemi is a KPJAYI Level 2 authorized Ashtanga yoga teacher and founder of Ashtanga Yoga Goa. She is well known among her students as a soft and feminine teacher with a strong foundation in the traditional Ashtanga yoga method, through which she guides her students with lightness and joy.
Heidi was born in a small town in Finland. At a young age, she found her passion in drawing and painting, and at the age of sixteen, left her home town to study Fine Arts. Art was the starting point for her inner journey. Stubbornly seeking her path, she started discovering more about herself through painting. In the process she also she got well rooted in a disciplined daily practise.
After a decade of completely immersing herself to Fine Arts, Heidi started practising Ashtanga Yoga in 2004. As yoga became an important part of her life, her dedication and commitment to the practise lead her to the motherland of yoga. 2008 Heidi made her first trip to India, and 2009 she found her teacher R Sharath Jois at Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore. Since then she is practising the tradition with him.
Heidi started teaching the method at Ashtanga Yoga School of Helsinki in 2009 and continued teaching in Helsinki for several years. R Sharath jois authorized her to teach the primary and intermediate series in 2012. Heidi has assisted him at the KPJAYI main shala in Mysore repeatedly. As a traditional Ashtanga yoga teacher, Heidi follows the teachings of her Guru R Sharath Jois, and emphasizes the importance of daily yoga practice as a tool for steadying the mind and, gradually, clearing the obstacles for knowing one's true Self.
Heidi's deep interest in the human mind and learning processes has also lead her to study behavioural sciences. She has Master's degree in Education and is qualified to teach adults in vocational education. When in Mysore, she continues to study Sanskrit chanting with Sri Lakshmish Bhat, and Sanskrit chanting and yoga philosophy with Dr. M.A. Jayashree and Sri. M.A.Narasimhan.
Since 2013 Heidi has been settled in India and is married to an Indian family. She lives in Mysore and in Goa with her husband, with whom she founded Ashtanga Yoga Goa in 2015. Though slowly learning about Indian culture, it is perhaps for her Finnish roots that Heidi loves peace and quietness and likes to stay close to the nature.
